How to Buy a Car

Buying a new or used car shouldn't be difficult, but sometimes it is! Often times, the terminology can make it more difficult than it needs to be. With our help, you'll see that a car purchase can be a really enjoyable experience!

You may be thinking of the brand, style, equipment and color you want for your new vehicle. However, lifestyle, daily driving habits and budget are also very important to consider before visiting a dealership.

Visiting a dealership
When you arrive at the dealership, you should expect a sales professional to greet you and spend some time assessing your wants and needs. By taking this time to talk, your salesperson will gather the information needed to point you in the right direction and perhaps make recommendations that you had not considered.

After you and the salesperson have taken a few moments to discuss your new vehicle, it is time to take a look at some vehicles. A good salesperson will be sure to do a complete demonstration of all the vehicle features. Remember to ask questions! Your salesperson is prepared and trained to help you choose the perfect vehicle.

Once you've narrowed down the vehicle's options and understand the equipment and vehicle packaging, it's time to test-drive your vehicle. Always test-drive the vehicle you are considering before you make a final decision! Not all vehicles drive the same. You wouldn't purchase a pair of shoes without walking around in them first and the same theory applies here. This is your chance to see how the vehicle feels. A couple of things to think about during your test-drive; Do you sit high enough? Do you have good visibility? Are the controls easy to reach? Do you feel comfortable and safe driving the vehicle?

After the test-drive, you will arrive back at the dealership. At this time, it is your decision about the next step. You may be considering multiple vehicles and choose to not negotiate a deal until you research other vehicles. Or, you may decide that the vehicle you have test-driven meets all of your requirements and you feel comfortable enough with your salesperson to negotiate a deal today.

Negotiating the best deal
The negotiation process varies greatly from dealership to dealership. Some dealerships conduct a cat and mouse game back and forth between the salesperson and sales manager. In this type of negotiating, the strength of your negotiating skills will determine the best price. Other dealerships present a hassle-free alternative to negotiations. The price posted is what you, and everyone else pays. Just remember, that you are in control of this process and should feel comfortable with each step as you reach agreeable numbers and terms on your new vehicle.

Buying or leasing? What is best for you?
You have the option to either lease your new vehicle for set number of months or buy the vehicle. Lease and purchase loans are two different ways to finance an automobile. One finances the use of a vehicle; the other finances the purchase of a vehicle. Each method has its own benefits and drawbacks.
When making a 'lease or buy' decision, you should look at your financial situation and your personal priorities. Making a 'lease or buy' decision is not quite cut and dry. However, a good dealership will be able to advise you on both methods and help you determine which will work best for you.

Also, ask about other incentive plans at the dealership including cash back options, low interest rates, or the number of months that your financing can be spread over. Your budget will help guide what's best for you.

Trading in your vehicle
If you have a trade-in, the vehicle will be appraised during the negotiations process. Your trade-in will be inspected and driven. The dealership will use many different methods such as Kelley Blue Book, Black Book, and live auction reports to determine the value of your trade-in. Typically, the value of your trade-in is deducted from the sale price of the new vehicle. If your trade-in has a payoff, which is a balance owed; this amount will be added to your new purchase or lease.

The final numbers

  • The dealership will present all of your numbers on a worksheet. These numbers should include the following:
  • Sale price of the new vehicle
  • Trade-in value
  • Trade-in payoff (if applicable)
  • Tax
  • Title
  • Documentation fees
  • Total amount of cash that you are putting down
  • Final monthly payment

Once these numbers meet your expectations and budget, you will sign a buyer's order and begin the process of taking delivery of your new vehicle. Congratulations!

Finance
You will meet the finance manager who completes the paperwork for your purchase or lease. It is the finance manager's responsibility to make sure that all of your paperwork is completed correctly so that there are no issues with your loan or titling. During the paperwork signing, several options will be covered with you. You will have the opportunity to learn about extended warranties, GAP insurance and other plans designed to protect your new vehicle.

Delivery
After you have completed your paperwork, you will take delivery of your new vehicle. Your salesperson will show you every feature of the car, go over the service schedule and ensure your comfort with the controls. You will also take tour of the dealership and meet the dealership's service and parts team.
After signing the necessary paperwork, you'll receive the keys and be sent on your way to enjoy your new purchase!
